T. Sam Markos Obituary

T. Sam Markos, 97 died December 1, 2017 at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. He was born on May 1, 1920 in Dover, NH to the late Athanasios and Chrisafo Markos. 

Sam married the love of his life, the late Dorothy (Johnson) Markos in 1940 and the couple enjoyed 54 years of marriage before her death in 1994. Sam enlisted in the US Army Air Force, reaching the rank of CPL with the Military Police during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked for many years as a delivery man for 20th Century Cleaners, he was then employed by Western Electric and retired in 1982 after 20 years of service. 

He was a life member and 3 time Governor of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1601 in Newburyport, he was also a member of the Seabrook American Legion and the Newburyport Elks Lodge 909, and a life member of the Logganiko Society of Ipswich, MA. Sam was the oldest member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Newburyport as well as being the oldest direct descendant of a Founder of the church. He was an avid Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics fan who enjoyed watching as many games as possible on tv, although nothing gave him more enjoyment than watching his grandchildren play high school sports. A fiercely independent person Sam lived in his family’s home in Newburyport until his passing. 

Sam is survived by his children James T Markos and his wife Ruth of Harveyville, KS, and Frank T. Markos and his wife Suzanne of Newburyport, daughter-in-law, Ann Markos of Newburyport, grandchildren, Brice Markos of Wichita, KS, Geoffrey Markos and his wife Theresa of Gardner, KS, Steven Markos and his wife Kristen of Bradford, MA, HaleeJo Markos of Tampa, FL, Alaina Markos of Walpole, MA, Richard Sweeney and his wife Danielle of Methuen, MA, as well as great grandchildren, Kiersten, Christopher, Zachary and Kian Markos, Caroline Solbo, Chelsee Sweeney and Chaz Zapanas, and his brother Ted Markos of Seabrook, NH, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Dorothy, Sam was predeceased by his son Arthur Markos and his siblings, Paul, Lambros, Chris, William, George, Tony, and Frank Markos, and Anna Papadopoulos.

His Funeral Service will be celebrated on Thursday December 7, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church with burial to follow at Oakhill Cemetery. Family and friends may call prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Sam’s name to the charity of ones choice.
