Michael Twomey Obituary

Michael Francis Twomey, also known as "Mickey" to some, passed away peacefully at the Hyder House in Dover N.H. on Saturday, May 6, 2017. As he told everyone who asked, he was in his 89th year.

This is being written not only to let people know what type of person he was but hoping the newspaper gets delivered to heaven and he can read it for himself. I want him to say to our mother...gee this guy had a really good life.

Mickey was a three sports standout at Newburyport High School. He was fortunate to have dated and then marry the great love of his life, the late Patricia Twomey (Daley). They were sweethearts in High School and married after his tour in Japan with the Army.  They raised their five kids in Newburyport, MA and have lived for the past seventeen years in Hampton, NH.

Looking at his working life, he would describe it as not a doctor but just a state worker. He always worked two jobs. He plowed the highways in the winter and painted the lines, putting up signs in the summer for both the State and a private contractor. He was a hard worker..I know as I worked summers trying to keep up with him. Thinking about it now, he was just as effective as a doctor. He saved lives by making the highways safe in the winter months (although we hated getting behind him) and directing how people drove, how fast they could go and helped them get where they were going. He had a lot of power.

Mickey looked forward to driving to the local convenient store first thing in the morning, stopping to see his friend Jim and getting his newspaper on a daily basis. He would visit, buy the papers and drive across the street to sit and watch the birds on the pond as he read his papers. It was his time. He was always up on current events, a wiz at crossword puzzles, and of course an avid reader of the obituaries. Maybe it's an Irish thing but he loved to read about people...what they had accomplished in their life, where they had been, who they left behind. I guess it makes you question what you have done in your life. I think he looked at his own life, as we all do, to see how much we contributed to society, always failing to see the things that really matter. Just prior to his passing, he was questioning some of the things he had done in his life. I stopped him and said "what really matters is what your family and friends would say about you".... that's really all that matters. I told him your family and friends would say you were a dedicated husband of 60 years, a great father loved by your five kids and a great friend to many. He was simply a really nice guy. If you can say that, you have had a wonderful life....maybe I will make a movie.

Mickey suffered loss in his later years as his beloved wife and two of his brothers, William and Daniel Twomey passed on before him. He loved our mother the same, from the time he met her to the day she died. His biggest regret was that he couldn't continue to care for her at home. It devastated him but he went to be with her every single day at the Nursing Home. He has now rejoined them.

He is survived by his brother Lawrence Twomey, who will live forever and does not look or act his age of 85. He also leaves behind his five children and their significant others, Eileen Hazen and husband Jim Hazen, Karen Twomey, Michael Twomey, Joan Gagalis and husband Bob Gagalis, Daniel Twomey and his wife Cheryl Twomey. Also, his eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He leaves behind his family and friends who adored him and will miss him.
