Joyce K. (Melancook) King, 75, a resident of Newburyport died September 16, 2018 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston with her spouse at her side. She was born on May 6, 1943 in Lynn, MA to the late Roger and Katherine (Kenyon) Melancook. She was raised in her early years in Marblehead before moving to Byfield where she attended public schools then graduating from Newburyport High School.
Following her graduation Joyce was employed by various local manufacturing companies as an assembler before retiring from Beswick Engineering in 2005.
Joyce will be lovingly remembered for her ever present smile, her “Hippy Flower Child” personality, her love of flowers, animals, and all creatures great and small. In her spare time she enjoyed thrift shopping. In her later years she spoke often of living on Plum Island during the 1970’s. Joyce was a member of the Newburyport Elks Lodge 909.
Joyce is survived by her spouse, of forty years, Chris King of Newburyport, and nephew, Roger K. O’Dell and his wife Livia of Hampton, VA. She was predeceased by her sister Julia K. O’Dell and her step-brothers, Carl and John Stelter.
At Joyce’s request services and burial will be private. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. King’s family with her funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s name to the Newburyport Elks 909 Scholarship Fund, 25 Low St. Newburyport, MA 01950 (Please include Joyce’s name on the comment line) or the charity of ones choice.
