Jean Patricia Anderson passed away on June 3, 2019, at the age of 86 after a very brief illness.
Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Jean grew up in New Bedford, the only child of Frank and Helen (Ezyk) McCarthy. She attended Sacred Heart Academy and Holy Family High School in New Bedford, where she was known for her vocabulary, interest in world affairs, and studious nature. She received her BA in History from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1954, and her Masters in Education from Salem State. She married James Anderson and resided in Brookline and Groveland before settling in West Newbury, where she taught third grade at the Dr. John C. Page school in West Newbury for many years. Her students remember her as an enthusiastic, passionate teacher who awakened their interest in literature, history, and science. She loved travel and went on several adventures to Europe with her children, and explored Ireland in search of her family history. Among her many interests were genealogy, conservation, word puzzles, and politics. After retiring, she was a long-time resident of Nichols Village in Groveland and most recently, at Port Healthcare Center of Newburyport.
Jean is survived by her sons David and Douglas, her daughter Ellin, her daughters-in-law Maureen and Alison, and her grandchildren Max, Philip, and Fiona.
She will be interred in a private burial service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Anderson’s family with her funeral arrangements.
