NEWBURYPORT, FORMERLY TEQUESTA, FL AND CONCORD, MA – Hugh F. Underhill, 86, died February 21, 2019, at his home in Newburyport, MA surrounded by all his children after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Wellesley, Mass, on June 29, 1932 to the late Arthur J. C. Underhill and Ruth (Foster) Underhill. Hugh was raised and educated in Wellesley, Mass, a graduate of Wellesley High School and Nichols College. He was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army Reserves. He married his beautiful wife, Norma S. Underhill, on July 6th, 1957, and was blessed with 58 years together, and five children. Prior to retirement, Hugh was President and co–owner of the Volunteer Insurance Agency headquartered in Maynard, Mass, an active member of the community serving in the Knights of Columbus, Rotary, and volunteered and supported many local community organizations. Hugh was a devout Catholic, attending Mass daily, a dedicated husband, loving father, grandfather, and friend. Hugh was a passionate Bruins fan and enjoyed the Red Sox and Patriots. He is survived by his children James A. Underhill and his wife, JoAnne of Hollis, N.H., John R. Underhill and his wife, Gia of Westford, Judith U. Berger and her husband, Jeffrey of Newburyport, Joseph M. Underhill and his wife Cristina of Westford, and Jane M. Buxbaum and her husband, David of Newburyport; 21 grandchildren; as well as his sister Marjorie (Underhill) Hall of Conway, N.H.. Hugh was predeceased by his wife Norma S. Underhill and his siblings Arthur and Richard Underhill.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are invited to attend Hugh’s Funeral Mass at the Star of the Sea Church in Salisbury on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. The Twomey LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home 193 High Street Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting the Underhill family with Hugh’s funeral arrangements.
