Gerard C. "Jerry" Cody

Gerard Charles Cody, age 91, was born to Charles V. and Jessie M. (Buchanan) Cody on August 7, 1927, the youngest of three sons. Jerry passed away peacefully at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill on March 22, 2019 after a short period of declining health.

Jerry attended Lynn Classical High School as a graduate of the class of 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy in March of 1945 and reported for active duty following his graduation serving in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged on October 4, 1949 and served in the reserves until 1954.   After his service years, Jerry worked as a Senior Designer at General Electric until his retirement in 1989.

Jerry married Patricia M. O’Brien on September 26, 1959 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport.  They had two children, Kathryn (Cody) Fallon and Christopher Cody. Jerry was very active in supporting his children’s activities and continued that tradition with his two grandsons, Colin and Trevor at the ball park, basketball games and music recitals. He recently assisted his grandson Colin with his Eagle Scout project building a storage shed at Camp Denison in Georgetown.

Jerry was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish, serving as an usher at the 4:00 p.m. mass for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 231 and served as their financial secretary for over 20 years.

Jerry loved the outdoors and he and his wife Pat were frequent walkers around Newburyport.  After his retirement, he spent many hours working in his yard and loved talking with neighbors and fellow walkers who would stop at their home on High Street to complement his work. Pat and Jerry led active lives and were kind to so many people. Their families were important to them and they hosted many a Yankee Homecoming party for family and their many friends.    Holiday’s were a very busy time at the Cody’s.   

In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his brothers John and Joseph and sister-in-law Ginny. Jerry’s beloved wife Patricia died on October 24, 2018 after fifty-nine years of true love and devotion. Jerry was very close to Pat’s family, all of whom predeceased her.   Jerry’s great sense of humor and love of “puns” will be missed by all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind and a true gentleman.

Jerry is survived by his daughter Kathy and her husband Tom Fallon; his son Chris and his wife Melissa and their two sons Colin and Trevor, as well as many Cody and O’Brien nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his close friends Eleanora Paciulan and Erford and Paula Fowler.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home at 193 High Street, Newburyport. Parking available behind the Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Church, 42 Green Street, Newburyport, followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery.
