Dr. Arthur J. Hewett retired as a podiatrist after 50 years of active practice. Born in Newburyport, MA on March 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Dr. Arthur J. Hewett, MD, of Newburyport and Lucy (Kelley) Hewett, of Lynn, MA. He attended Mount Saint Charles Academy and St. Michaels College and graduated from Ohio College of Podiatry. Post graduate work was done at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and his internship was at Civic Hospital, in Detroit, MI. A longtime resident of Newburyport, Dr. Hewett has resided at the Elizabeth Calsey House and, most recently, at Masconomet Health Care Center in Topsfield, MA.
Dr. Hewett was a member of the Newburyport Public Library Board, a life member of the Knights of Columbus 231, the Massachusetts Podiatry Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association, where he was recognized for 50 years of service.
Dr. Hewett is survived by his sister, Mary Ellen McLeod, of Newburyport, MA. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret “Peggy” (Nason) Hewett, his sister, Julie Hewett Cole, brother, Edward Hewett, brother-in-laws George McLeod and Edward Cole, and sister-in-law June Hewett. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Family and friends may call Sunday November 3, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. THERE IS NO LONGER ANY PARKING AVAILABLE BEHIND THE FUNERAL HOME PER ORDER OF THE CITY OF NEWBURYPORT. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Monday November 4, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Church. All are invited to meet at the Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.
