Newburyport, MA – Daniel Antoni Downer, 93, died February 27, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Manhattan, NY to the late Frank and Marianna (Waszeciak) Dovenar. Daniel was raised in Brooklyn, NY along with his five older siblings, Helen Dovenar, Caroline Dovenar, John T. Downer, Peter P. Downer and Elizabeth Dovenar McKinley. Daniel attended the Merchant Marine Academy before serving in World War II and the U.S. Naval Reserve. He married Margaret “Peggy” M. Pray and raised daughters Susan E. Fischette and Carolyn A. Palenscar in Brooklyn, NY and Williston Park, NY. Daniel worked as an engineer for Bond Clothing Stores and later for the New York Daily News. Daniel and Peggy enjoyed retirement in Cocoa Beach, FL. Daniel is survived by his daughter Carolyn, nine grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the Funeral Home. His Funeral Service will immediately follow the calling hours in the Funeral Home at 6:00 PM. Calling hours will also be held at Michaels Funeral Home in Middle Village, NY on Thursday, March 7, 2019 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by burial at St. John Cemetery also in Middle Village.
