Joan Veronica (Goucher) Caswell

Joan Veronica (Goucher) Caswell, 84, passed away peacefully at her home on April 12, 2024. She was born in Newburyport on July 12, 1939 and was a lifelong resident.

She attended the Immaculate Conception School and worked several manufacturing jobs throughout her life until she got a job in housekeeping at Anna Jacques hospital, working there for many years before retiring. After her retirement, she continued working part time for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Ipswich as a housekeeper and driver.

Joan was a devout Catholic who was very active in her faith community. She began by serving as a Eucharistic Minister at the Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport and then became an Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1993 at the invitation of her dear friend and mentor Sister Ellen Julie Flanagan, SNDdeN.

Joan was a loving mother and shared a very special bond with her daughter Melissa over the years. They spent lots of time together and had many fun adventures!

She was a kind soul and an inspiration to those around her.  Joan will be remembered for her willingness to help others as well as her strength and perseverance. Her gentle, faithful presence was felt throughout her spiritual community and beyond and she will be greatly missed.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Melissa Caswell and Kathleen (Caswell) Webber and her husband William; her twin brother James “Jim” Goucher and his wife, Jeanine; brother Stanley “Butch” Goucher and her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Webber) Landry and William Webber as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Mary Kiman and Shirley Oliver as well as her best friend, Sister Ellen Julie Flanagan.

There will be no calling hours but family and friends are invited to Joan’s interment ceremony at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Storey Ave. in Newburyport. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Caswell’s family with her arrangements.
