Maureen Curley Obituary

Maureen Patricia Curley, 69, of Newbury, Mass. passed away peacefully on February 17, 2017 after a brief illness, surrounded by loving family & friends.

Maureen was born in Lynn, Mass. on August 28, 1947 to the late Helen (Rogers) Curley and Dr. Cornelius C. Curley. She grew up in Lynn, Mass., and attended high school at Saint Chretienne Academy in Salem, Mass. She went on to achieve a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis College (now U.N.E.) in Biddeford, Maine. She obtained her Nursing Degree from Laboure College and later received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Salem State College and her Master of Science in Nursing Degree from Boston College.

Maureen was passionate about Nursing and excelled in her profession. She worked for many years at North Shore Medical Center as an ICU and Emergency Room Nurse. She was Assistant Vice President of Patient Care Services at Anna Jaques Hospital from 1987 to 2000, and then worked at Brigham & Women’s Hospital as Nursing Director of Medical Intermediate and Intensive Care Units for seven years. She attained her Infection Control Practitioner Certification in 2010 and practiced at North Shore Medical Center and Brigham & Women’s Hospital where she was the recipient of multiple “Partners in Excellence Awards”.

Maureen had a zest for life, an adventurous spirit and a love of the outdoors. When she was not working in her yard, she could be found driving her Triumph TR6, piloting a small plane, zip lining in the White Mountains, or hiking in Acadia National Park. She loved the ocean, boating, and her beach house at Hills Beach, Maine. She loved traveling to Mt. Desert Island every year with her close friends. She enjoyed travel to Europe, Hawaii, and Cruising the Caribbean and Panama Canal with family.

She loved animals, especially Great Danes. Maureen volunteered for a cause close to her heart, the Service Dog Project, a non-profit organization donating trained dogs to individuals with severe balance limitations.

Maureen will be remembered for her humor, caring personality, and her heartfelt generosity. She would drop everything and go out of her way to help anyone in need.

She leaves behind her life partner of 42 years, Diane Barsam, her brother Dennis Curley and his wife Lynn Bernstein of Miami Beach, her niece Benvenida and her husband Michael Sherbekow, her great nephew Easton of Phildelphia, and her brother Neil and his wife Joan Curley, of Naples. She will be greatly missed by her extended Barsam Family who loved her very much, as well as by her many close friends and colleagues, and her faithful dogs Caramia & Lexi.
